Flag Protocol Summary

Protocol is an important part of the Vexillologist's skills just as geography, history and design feature.

A complete cover of protocol is a huge task to publish on this site, and over time we are sure Pennant House can provide a more concise view of Protocol.

Certainly the blue ensign is Australia's national flag and may be flown on land or sea. On the other hand, the red ensign is another version of our national flag but would be well described as Australia's maritime flag. This red background flag is for ships and boats at sea only. Both the Royal Australian Navy and the Royal Australian Air Force have individual ensigns. A joint services flag also exists which represents all three services including army. All of which, are available at Pennant House.

  • When flying the Australian flag where there are two flag poles, the Australian flag should be on the left hand pole of the viewer from the street.
  • The flags of two nations should never be flown on the same flagstaff, no nation should be above another.
  • No flag should be flown above the Australian Flag.
  • When the Australian National flag is used to cover and honour the dead over a coffin at a funeral, the Union flag should be draped as if to go over the left shoulder of the deceased. Of course, the flag is removed before the coffin is lowered or finally sent to the crematorium.
  • A tattered flag or dilapidated ensign must not be flown. The flag should be disposed of with dignity by private burning. Pennant House will dispose of your flag correctly when you buy your new one.
  • On a parade, the Australian flag should always lead.
  • Eight in the morning until sunset is the correct time to fly our national flag. At night the flag should be properly illuminated.

Australian National Flag

National Flags - A tattered flag or dilapidated ensign must not be flown. It is considered to be in an insult to the nation of the flag to fly in such a condition. The flag should be disposed of with dignity by private burning. Pennant House can dispose of your flag correctly when you buy your new one.
